I can scarcely believe that anyone took this movie seriously, principally because of Nicolas Cage's (par-for-the-course) appalling acting.. It is quite pitiful to watch him attempt to present a noble mien as the angelic character, cocking his head on one side; standing on a skyscraper in his long slouch coat, looking with compassion at the teeming millions below; speaking... very... slowly... to indicate that he is troubled by the torment of emotions which we poor humans have to endure. Really he is HYSTERICAL.
What is even worse is his transformation into a 'human' - soulful, puppy-eyed looks at Meg Ryan accompanied by speech of a normal speed, just in case we missed the finer points of his change in characterisation. This movie is a ... Read More:

I was never a fan of Casper until I watched this movie. It is great fantasy and good acting from everyone including Christina Ricci. A good film for all the family. I also recommend the dvd "Casper meets Wendy".

The Baudelaire children lead a cushy life of reading books, inventing, and biting. One day at the beach Mr. Poe informs them of the unfortunate event of their house and parents burning down. They are then shuffled around to various unrelated relatives. At every turn they are perused by their uncle Count Olaf, who covets their inheritance. Trying to explain this to grownups is almost impossible.
Grate narration of the movie by Jude Law; he added a dimension that made you want to see what was happening next.
The books offer such great (terrible) resources for the movie. However it was a bit much trying to cram three books into one movie. Each book has more than enough story line for a movie. The events were taken out of order which ... Read More:

I've never read the books, it seems that if you have and like them you're not going to like the film. But i loved the film! Funny, well acted by all (and considering i have a pathological dislike of child actors thats sayings something!) and well directed...

10 Items Or Less is a real find. To call it a film would be mildly incorrect- it's more of a lesson about how beautiful and surprising life can be when you put a smile on your face and open both of your eyes. Director Brad Silberling manages to squeeze more joy, laughs and genuine emotion into 70 minutes than Hollywood could ever dream of.
Shot on location in the empty outskirts of California, the film has a warm, grainy, summery look... Which you soon realize is the perfect setting for the proceedings- as a kind, tired old movie-star runs into a no-nonsense young checkout girl while researching for his next film.
The friendship created between old movie-star and young checkout girl is stunningly realized. Morgan Freeman and Paz Vega play the two ... Read More:
I missed this film at the movies, and I love good kids movies.
I was not disappointed, it is mildly dark in the vein of Roald Dahl, the acting is wonderful, especially Jim Carey who is in his element, but also the guy from League of Gentlemen, and three kids (even the toddler is brilliant) and Meryl Streep. It is a childhood fantasy stocked with wondeful and imaginative scenery, props and script. I love the house clinging to the cliff and Lacrimose Lake.
I would have savoured this when I was ten (but I love it now anyway). A favourite in my collection, wonderful!

It is rare that you meet a film as charming, beautiful, amusing and well-acted as this one. It is an utter gem, being relatively unknown, and its sparity of circulation simply heightens its appeal, making it seem that you alone are sharing in this wonderful secret.
I would beg people to watch this film as vigorously as I could, and yet I would be slightly hesitant as I did so, wanting rather to keep it to myself, such is its personal tone and style.
The characters are very well crafted and fantastically portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon. Silberling really hit a sweet spot when he chose a dead character as the pivot around which the film is founded, keeping the audience guessing.
