Mozart's Requiem has to be one his most famous pieces, and this recording does it many favours. The "Confutatis" is renowned as the most visual movement, and the Gächinger Kantorei and Bach-Collegium Stuttgart play with such passion, the emotions and visions of hell mustered up are clear in all senses. If anyone has ever seen the film Amadeus, the pictures from the film are instantly remembered as the orchestra plays the music written by Mozart to his death, resulting in his death. The soloists and chorus are as equally sensitive as they are passionate and harsh. Vaughan Williams - Complete Symphonies

I was introduced to the symphonies of Vaughan Williams in my teens through LPs of the complete cycle by Andre Previn and the LSO. These LPs have now been transferred to disc and have been made available again. They remain, after all these years and having listened to a number of other cycles, the best of the bunch, in my humble opinion.

Before moving to London, part of Andre Previn's background was in the theatre. As an American showman, he proved capable - and still is capable - of bringing out the drama inherent in the symphonic form, whilst at the same time producing a deeper understanding of the traits that make up each symphony.

There are few occasions these days where music will take your emotions to the depths of despair and up to the highest cloud and back before the album is finished. Mostly this happens in film soundtracks and Hannibal is easily one of the finest. There is humour, sadness, heart-pounding atmosphere and some pieces that will make your heart sing and sent your soul alight as the finest music does, and should.
The highlight of the album is Vide cor Meum by Patrick Cassidy - the album is worth buying for this alone. When I first watched the film I became determined to discover which great opera that piece was from, not realising that it was written specially for the film. The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. On Christmas Day 1989, only six weeks later, due to the organizational skills of Leonard Bernstein (and others) an historic concert of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was given in the Schauspielhaus in the former East Berlin with instrumentalists and singers from a number of different countries. These included orchestra members from the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra of the Kirov Theater of Leningrad, the London Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris. The Only Piano Album You'll Ever Need

As a professional concert pianist for the last thirty years or so, it was a great relief to find that they have released everything you need on 2 CDs. Sure enough, since I bought it I have been able to discard the 1000 or so CDs that I had collected of performers like Cortot, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff and Schnabel (and I now have enough room for a pool table!). They are simply not necessary when you have these two CDs.

If you're looking for any CD's with movie music, this would be my first, and only, stop. There's something for everyone, and although stuff like the Indiana Jones theme is missing, and the opera CD (Disc 5) is a little week, the likes of "Ride of the Valkiryies" and "Ode to Joy" is just timeles, and best of all, immortalised by the films they're featured in, the compliment of all compliments to these films. It's very cheap to, I would highly recommend this.

Although the amazon site includes the wrong sound samples above (they are from the LaPone revival), this item is indeed the original cast recording with Lansbury and Cariou. Even better, it's been remastered and includeds 2 bonus track not featured on the original (and much more expensive) RCA double disc. What a find!
