I received this as a gift from my other half when I bought a new laptop, which came with Windows Vista pre-installed. There's nothing much to complain about. The chapters are structured in a sensible way, and I find Andy Rathbone's tone really appropriate to the needs of the 'Dummies' series (I mean this as a compliment rather than a criticism). My only real criticism is that I don't think Windows Vista is half as far detached from XP as a lot of people try to insist. This isn't to say that the existence of this book is unnecessary, just that a lot of the material herein will be already known to a lot of those of us who used XP extensively. I'm not an advanced user or anything like that, but I felt that this book covered a lot of old ground, ... Read More:

As a professional programmer I wondered whether this was going to patronise me too much; I needn't have worried, Walkenbach's approach is just right.
He tells it like it is, with plenty of good examples and real world applications for those examples. I'm sure Walkenback doesn't expect this book to teach you everything about Excel and whilst using it I searched for other examples on the 'Net which reinforced what he was teaching me.
But this was the book that provided me with the central learning experience and for which I am eternally grateful. Thanks John!

I can recommend this book but only to programmers experienced in an OO language.
I have only read 500 pages so far but am sufficiently annoyed that I felt the need to write a review. I have covered all the core and advanced C# features and am now heading in to the .NET assemblies section.
I have found the phrasing imprecise and the editing substandard. I am surprised that no errata has appeared on the publisher's "Pro C# 2008" web page despite it being released last year. Code examples are copious but frequently differentiate themselves very little from previous examples and could save hundreds of pages by being cut down.
Despite my criticisms, I feel that I have now gained a working knowledge of C#. I am ... Read More:

Simply the best book on introductory SPSS that exists.I know nothing about the author but having bought this book in the middle of a statistics open assignment I can confidently say that I love her and want to marry her. There must be dozens of books that claim to be beginners guides to SPSS- this one actually does what it says; totally brilliant.

A excellent book for those of us that aren't too familar with this computer lark.Very easy to read with great see-how guides.Lovely coloured pages that invite you to get involved, yet without bogging you down with too much information.I gave this book 5 stars although it doesn't cover some of 'vista ultimate' functions, but hey if you are man enough to handle the ultimate(like myself)then this book will serve you well, plain and simple.

Not much to say really.. this is a great book for somebody who has no experience of using a computer or wants a refresher of the basics. A great place to start off but probably a little too basic if you have some computing experience.

As the title suggests, the book is a step by step guide to Office Project 2007. It walks you through all of the different aspects of Project that a new or intermediate user could be expected to know or benefit from. It also provides a number of "tips" where a more advanced or enquiring user may want to find further information. The layout and structure of the book is very good, which could reasonably be expected, with "Chapters at a Glance", "Summaries of topics covered", "Key points" and very clear formatting to help the reader/user.
As a previous user of an older version of Project, I bought the book as both a refresher to Project and an introduction to the new 07 version. It has certainly delivered on both these counts. However, I would ... Read More:

This book is an excellent introduction into the world of Visual Basic 2008 .NET language.
He gives you a list of the chapters you need to skip/ skim over and read thoroughly depending on your background (new programmer, coming from a different .NET language or a VB6 programmer).
He does a good job of pointing out the essentials within his book and his examples are easy enough to follow.
I've bought quite a few "Teach Yourself" books in the past and was so bored by chapter 2 that they were shelved. I've finished this now and will be looking for a book with more gritty details.
A great intro book for the novice programmer or a new programmer to the world of .NET programming.
