Any Mac owner operating their computer using Leopard should have this extremely helpful, floppy volume readily to hand. It takes you effortlessly through the basics, constantly surprises you by revealing information you never suspected is available to you just beneath the surface, provides countless hints and tips to get the most from the system and is a great friend to have in times of need.

I've learned a large number of languages, toolkits and SDKs over the years and been part of the review process of a fairly well known book as well, so believe me when I say this is not a great quality book!
If you read the back cover and even the prerequisites, you might think this book is for you. The prerequisites page only mentions the following with regards to knowledge required: "Familiarity with Objective-C". No mention is made of familiarity with writing software for OS X, but by page 23 we're seeing statements like "These essential frameworks enable you to build your iPhone applications using the same fundamental classes and calls you are familiar with from the Macintosh". This is followed on 24 by a comment about Info.plist ... Read More:

I bought Aperture 2 and thought I had got to grips with the basics. I decided to buy this book as a reference for developing my skills. As a reference it is great. However, I have recently been following Richard Harrington's pod casts, one of the authors, and they have moved me on considerably. The book is no longer simply a reference point- it is a road map for discovering the amazing potential of this incredible software.
Own a PC? Buy a Mac, buy Aperture 2, buy this book.

Clearly this book was written by a computer specialist, not an educator. Everything's here, sure, but the tone is so impersonal and patronising that I really find it a chore to open it. For any topic, you first have to scan through reams and reams of basic instructions, re-hashing stuff that you are supposed to have covered chapters ago... every time! And I'm new to the program... imagine if I was just brushing up!
Great if you need reminding how to launch the program every time you learn something new.
So 5 stars for being accurate... minus 2 stars for being as inspiring as a phone directory.

the book refers to project builder rather than xcode. admits xcode was on the way when it was written, but says 'these instructions should work fine'. They didn't for me - the output from the first program never appears on screen. I've been googling for answers to this, and discovered the Apple documentation for xcode which I'll now have to study first.
Admittedly it does give instructions for compiling from terminal or windows if you prefer.

I bought this with my computer (sorry Amazon). Anyway; I've bought a few PC technical books in the past and found them tough going, I actually found myself enjoying reading this book; I will look out for other titles written by David Pogue.
As a side note it was a good job I did buy this book as you get no manual to speak of with a new i-mac

I was interested in Photoshop Elements 6 but wondered whether I might end up paying nearly $100 for something that was not a lot better than iPhoto but much less functional than full Photoshop. In actual fact it is a significant advance on iPhoto for image manipulation and does everything I want just as well as the full version would.
The only downside I have encountered is that it is not intuitive to use and the included documentation is poor. To be fair, Adobe do recommend that you use their website Help, but I'd recommend anyone who does not have Photoshop experience to also purchase Barbara Brundage's "Photoshop elements 6 for Mac The Missing Manual". This saved me going crazy in the learning phase and even now that I am comfortable with the program ... Read More:

This little book helped me decide to make the switch from my current MP3 player and go for an iPod. It's so clearly written, so full of great advice and tips that it's been better than any user manual could possibly have been.
Written with the usual wit and flair one expects from Rough Guides, this is an absolute must for anyone who is thinking of buying an iPod. For once - the blurb on the cover of a book is actually true. "You need this book". An excellent little guide indeed.
