I am quite a confident cook, having plenty of practise with four kids !! I do love this book, I got it as a gift for someone for christmas, but alas i started reading it , then cooking from it and now it is mine ! Will have to get another copy for christmas gift!! Recipies are full of flavour and anyone could try their hand,if you can't make something tasty from this book then stay out of the kitchen ;-) !!

I don't grow my own veg, so this review applies only to the recipe portion of the book.
I watched the series on TV and was really excited to try the recipes from the book. To my disappointment, compared to the TV show, the (book) recipes turned out to be dumbed down somewhat and missing (in my opinion) some crucial steps/explanations. Also some recipes were really too much trouble for the results. For example "Humble home-cooked beans" uses a long list of ingredients (incl.5 types of herbs, expensive and leftovers difficult to use up) but the end result is just rather boring boiled beans!

You know the drill, you see a cookbook in the shop, pick it up and browse through, see about 3 or 4 recipes that grab you and head for the checkout... Then, when you get home and cook a couple you find the rest of the book overly complicated and ultimately it gets tucked away with the rest of the Gordon's, Nigella's etc etc to gather dust. Not so with the latest offering from Mr Oliver... I've bought most of Jamie's books and I've tried a fair few of his recipes over the years, but this book contains the best selection yet in my opinion. I actually bought this particular one for my husband as he'd promised 2008 would be the year he finally learnt to cook more than beans on toast! But I've also found it really comprehensive and easy to follow ... Read More:

This is just as great as all the other books - easy, delicious recipes that actually work in normal life. You'll find some really new, inspiring recipes for pasta and risotto ... One of my favourites is the "salmon fillet wrapped in prosciutto with herby lentils, spinach and yoghurt" (tasty and moist). The book is also great, if you're planning to make your own pasta but don't know exactly how: Jamie explains this in detail. I would recommend this book to everyone!

In this book, you'll find a wide variety of recipes ranging from british over north african and asian to the italian ones that are Jamie's trademark. There is something for every occasion in it, up to making your own bread. A book not only for fans but for everyone who's looking for easy manageable recipes that can still impress. Try the baked butternut squash served warm with a salad - you're sure to get applause. A book that should be missing on no shelf.

Don't believe the one star reviews - I've had this book for years now, I'm coming back to it again and again and I'm definitely not a beginner or a bad cook, even if I say so myself. The recipes I made all turned out well (apart from one time which was my own fault, I boiled the onions for stuffing too long, to find the exact point is a bit tricky) and they're definitely not all simple beginners' stuff. Try the pork fillet in Parma ham with the rhubarb, it's a great dish for entertaining. Of course, the book contains easy recipes (and those that look impressive are often easy enough to accomplish, if you follow the recipe) but perhaps that's just the good thing about it: beginners won't be frightened away. This is actually the book that got my brother in law ... Read More:

Jeanette Orrey has finally written the book I have been searching for in years....I have 4 young kids and have been trying to find recipies which were good old fashioned meals like I was given as a child. Her values and beliefs regarding eating habits mirror my own - I have tried many of the dishes and the kids loved them (even the fussy child)!!! I am eagerly awaiting the second book arriving! Well Done Jeanette! Many thanks!
