... Which is a bonus as I prefer my paranormal fiction to be at the urban fantasy end rather than paranormal romance with tediously over-drawn and arrogant Alpha males.
This book makes you work as the author assumes you know the short story that came beforehand. And I quite liked figuring it out.
I didn't find Anna annoying or overly submissive; I found that her character developed once she stopped being regularly beaten and raped. The romance also developed at a sensible rate - Anna was a person who had been brutalised for years. The real core of the story to me, was the back story of Bran, his sons and his own parentage, which fills in well with the Mercy stories.
I look forward to the next one in the series.

I absoutley loved this book. One of the two main plots tackled Mercy's struggle to choose between Sam and Adam (a plot line which is obvious if you have read the other two books). It had me on edge all through the book and I was more than satisfied with how it turned out. Her struggle with and realisation of her feelings was beautifully constructed. Briggs writes Mercy's character (and the others)brilliantly and her confusion over her feelings felt incredably real and the choice she makes is the one I have been wising for from the start of the books!
The second of the main plot lines involves the investigation into the murders of members of the Fae population and are occuring on their reservation. This quickly becomes crucial when ... Read More:

This sequel to the very engaging Moon Called was a bit slow starting off, but pretty good by the end, a sorceror/vampire is on a killing spree in Mercy's town and its up to her to track it down as the local werewolves, fae and vampires have had no luck. I enjoyed the characters, and the author has clearly thought out the ins-and-outs of her various supernatural races but it seemed a little slow at times. Fun but I hope the next one's better.

Overall an enjoyable read that was well written and imaginative.
Mercy is a likeable character and surrounded by a good supporting cast and in a perhaps oversaturated market Briggs' take on the supernatural was refreshing.
My only complaint would be an imbalance in the plot. I have no problems with the lack of romance, but as Briggs introduced the love interest angle and past relationships, I felt she should have given them a little more attention, at times this aspect wasn't well developed enough to have the impact that Briggs intended and as a result some scenes felt a little rushed in this regard.

I must admit that I only bought this book for the Patrica Briggs story, which was excellant and I'm looking forward to the full novel she'll be releasing later on this year with the characters.
However, I didn't like the other stories in it at all (I only got around to the thrid story, but I was kinda bored with the book at that point, so I didn't even bother reading Sunny's...from some of the reveiws here, I'm probably glad that I didn't...) The reason why I'm disapointed in the rest of the book is because I thought that with a title like "On the Prowl" they would all be werewolf stories, but sadly, aside from Patrica Briggs' story, that isn't the case. In fact, I think a better choice for the other authors would have been Kelley Armstrong, ... Read More:

Another good 'un from Briggs, this sees Traveller mage Seraph rescued by a baker-turned-soldier; 20 years on, having set aside their former lives to live as peaceful farmers, the past comes knocking and both are involved in dark plots involving magic, the return of an age-old enemy and the fate of the emperor itself. Well-written and convincing characters, plus its nice to see a more unusual hero, the sequel is even better though.

Those who have come to Patricia Briggs having read "Moon Called" will find that this book is very different in style from that werewolf/vampire story. "Steal The Dragon" is a fantasy like "Dragon Bones" and "Dragon Blood" as well as her "Raven's" duology. Despite the use of the word "Dragon" in the title of this book it isn't related to the other two dragon books - the only occurrence of "Steal the Dragon" in this book is as a game rather like Chess.
Rialla is an ex-slave working as a horse trainer in Sianim. She comes to the attention of the Spymaster as she is an empathy as well as an ex-slave. Machinations are afoot in a neighbour land, the place where Rialla was formerly a slave, and the Spymaster wishes her to travel, along with Laeth, a mercenary, ... Read More:

I really liked Dragon Bones and I really like Dragon Blood. Like most Patricia Briggs books, it's basically a fairy tale and a well written one at that. The characters are believable and well developed and the primary characters are emminently likeable - I wanted them to win (and I'm the sort of person who is normally exasperated by the heros and ends up sympathising with the villains).
If you like a light fandango of escapeism - give both a go.
