"Brock" (as it's known!) is without doubt not just the best Microbiology textbook available but one of the best textbooks period. The book is logically set out, beginning with basic introductory material covering areas such as how we define a microorganism, cell structure, evolution, diversity and biochemistry before moving on to more complex general topics, including microbial growth, bioenergetics, catabolism and molecular biology. Brevia on Virology and Mycology are given, before moving on to the main sections on Bacteria and Archaea, arranged in terms of the taxonomy used in Bergey's Manual (the Microbiology Bible), going through the Proteobacteria by Class before covering Gram positive Bacteria and all the other various groups. My son is having an Ancient Egyptian birthday party. He has lots of books on Ancient Egypt and I have a degree in archaeology. Do we really need another book? I bought this one knowing it might just repeat what we already knew, but far from it! We have been so delighted with this book. Its manner is very friendly - a little earnest but not annoyingly so. It draws the child in (my son will be 10), offering a mixture of facts and activities and also moments for reflection, such as how cultures may differ but all have somthing positive to teach us. My son is currently making clay pyramids to put into his living, growing model of Ancient Egypt. At the party we plan for children to write their names in heiroglyphs - we have several heiroglyphic alphabets in ... Read More:

As usual the lonely planet West Africa is full of details, which enable a traveller to travel around West Africa, ranging from the best hotels in small towns to bus schedules. From the fertile coast to the sandy deserts it provides a good but brief overview of the nature, history and present sights. The only weak point is the limited amount of information on regional cultural differences or history, which is probably caused by the number of countries covered

Some really good background and context for SL, and some good detailed tips for doing things like creating and finessing your avatar, but I (and a lot of others I met) spent a long time stuck on the introduction Island and couldn't find a way off and no help from the 'Guide' book.

Took me some persistence to really get going in SL and the book didn't really help me in the 'Rough Guide' way I'd have liked. Still - if you've alreayd got mates in SL, you'll be fine and this book can help add a few fininshing tweaks (although you can probably work them out for yourself and have fun doing it.
