Lovely books and lovely story cd's too. So much nicer in the car than mind bending childrens music ALL THE TIME! We've even managed to get our 2 year old to stay at the table for a complete meal if the cd is on. I cannot recommend this highly enough. It's just a shame there is only one story collection available.

Lola is very excited because Marv is bringing his little brother Morten round to play, and Lola has lots of plans for Morten, all of which Morten, who seems to be chronically shy, doesn't seem to have a lot of say in. It ends well, as usual, but with that nicely ambiguous mix of morality and what children are actually like and what children actually do, which makes these books so appealing.
This has the usual top class illustrations. I love Child's style, the cut and paste, scrapbook mixed with line drawing and other media. It's fascinating to see what materials she has mixed up to create such child friendly illustrations. This may seem common now, but this type of illustration and the mixing of font styles and uneven lines of ... Read More:

I'm a mom of a 7 year old and now that he's going to school I thought of getting him some activity books. My very busy sticker book has big drawings and stickers and they are just so much fun that I was really hoping he could invite me to join on the game. Beware not to hide the book for your own use before giving it to your child!!!

Lots of these newer Charlie and Lola books are spin offs from the television series, and aren't written by Lauren Child at all. Sometimes this doesn't matter, as the series and the books do try to stay as close to the original books as possible, and with good reason, they work.
This one, to me, is not quite on the money. Child is very playful and cheeky with her stories. It's always clear that Charlie and Lola are good kids who are kind to each other, despite the mischief they get into, but in this book the moral is rather laboured, and it's alarmingly thin on the amusement front.
Lola becomes obsessed by dressing up as an alligator, and refuses to do anything unless she is in costume. Charlie worries that she will ... Read More:

I was 'almost' put off this book by the first review as my 5 year old daughter is a 'girly girl' who loves pink and sparkly and unicorns too. I am so glad I went with the other reviews. This is the best activity/colouring book we have had...and trust me we have been through a lot! Yes we needed to help her with reading some of the ideas/instructions for a page, but once we did we were amazed at what she could come up with using her own imagination. There is also tons to colour so when she wanted something a bit more straightforward she would happily get her crayons and be absored for ages. I cannot recomend this enough...and now evn cheaper...buy it!!

I have been reading Pippi Longstocking to my 4 year old, and keeping her up late - we can't get enough of it! If you love the cheekiness and quirkiness of Charlie and Lola, then you will adore Pippi. It's hard to believe that this book was written over 60 years ago, you can certainly see where Lauren Child got her inspiration from! Lauren's illustrations suit this story perfectly. It is an absolute classic and a real gem. I will be buying copies for all my daughters' friends 5th birthdays!!! I just really hope that the publishers will bring us lots more Astrid Lindgren classics, illustrated by Lauren Child.
