I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book..... and then struggled to make myself finish it.

The facts of the case of interesting but the book is massively padded out with all manner of facts on victorian life and morals which I found very boring and tedious.

I thought I had bought a really gripping true crime story but I can't believe the author managed to make a whole book out of this.

I really hate not finishing a book so I made my way to the end.... and then wished I hadn't bothered. The book went straight in the box for the charity shop I'm afraid. Dull dull dull!

What a wonderful delightful surprise this book has been. The Queen of Whale Cay - Joe - was brave, fiercely loyal and completely unique. There never has and never will be anyone like her. A packed life that inspires you to do more with your own. A loyalty to friends that reminds you to look up the ones you've left behind. This book brings Joe's past to life with scenes and stories you could never have imagined. And when I watch old movies from now on I'll recall the scenes from this book that were happening at the same time. For example Joe's encounters with Marlene Dietrich make me want to watch her (YouTube - that scene from Morocco 1930)movies again. For example scenes from World War 1 - Joe was driving an Ambulance aged just 16. For ... Read More:

If you are fascinated by the hypocrisy of the Victorians, you'll love this book. If you want to read a great murder mystery, you should probably search out a work of fiction instead.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher has a wide charter: Tell the story of the murder of three-year-old Saville Kent in his English country home, describe the police investigations, relate the public reaction to the murder and investigations, detail what happened to the characters, help us understand our psychological need to read detective fiction, and provide new insight into the seeds of the crime.
