French: Beginner (Collins Language Revolution)

A fun and interesting way to pick up the basics. One CD goes along with the book, and the other you can take out with you in the car or when out and about. The mind-maps really add to the learning experience, and help the vocab to 'stick' better than other more traditional methods, I've found. I last learned French at school quite a few years ago, and this really helped to bring back the knowledge. CDs aid in the pronounciation, but there's also a very useful pronounciation guide to help you out. Highly recommended.

This book adds significantly to the growing library of books devoted to the process and practice of Appreciative Inquiry. The sub-title of `Using AI to Facilitate Organizational Development' is a very clear summary of the book's content, and it will be particularly valuable to those who know the fundamentals of AI and wish to take their practice to a new level. It is not a `how-to' for AI itself, although it does include excellent chapters on its history and process - so it does not compete with the excellent titles by Watkins & Mohr or Whitney & Trosten-Bloom. Instead it focuses on exploring conversational approaches to organisation development, of which Appreciative Inquiry is at the forefront.

Cost-Based Oracle Fundamentals: v. 1 (Expert's Voice in Oracle)

If you want to understand and I mean really understand the oracle CBO, beg borrow or steal this book.

It's an engaging book and very technical in places, which is absolutely how it should be. Any book that discusses the CBO and is not technical, and could be read it whilst watching `Match of the Day' is probably not worth the paper.

Every Oracle Developer, DBA, Data Architect etc should own a copy.

This book may not cover tons of Oracle detail, but it has very human side, rarely seen in any technical book, let alone the rather dry topic of database design. If you only ever buy one Oracle design book, make it this one, you will not be disappointed, absolutely superb. The top Oracle "scientists" give their honest and often brutal opinon on some of the major design mistakes that Oracle database designers have made, when they don't fully understand how to use the database. The highlights must be the single table application "Vision" and probably the best beginners guide to tuning with the wait interface available at the moment. I have actually read the book cover to cover, twice now, looking forwad to readin it again!

Practical Oracle 8i: Building Efficient Databases

This book is awesome.

All of the recommendations it gives are based on in-depth discussions of how the features actually work. The overall impression is that the author is speaking from personal experience of what actually works in practice (the title is very apt in this respect). By taking this approach, Jonathan Lewis avoids perpetuating existing myths and also avoids creating new ones.

Some of it is hard to follow, but this is inevitable given the depth it goes into. All I will say is that if you are serious about understanding Oracle databases and delivering good Oracle database performance then you will be rewarded if you stick with it.
