The Great Crash, 1929 (Penguin business)

by: John Kenneth Galbraith

October 29, 1992
John Kenneth Galbraith's classic study of the 1929 Wall Street crash is an exhilarating read. Galbraith combines a fluent, witty style with a detailed breakdown of the build up to disaster,

It is interesting to note how most of the experts - journalists, academics, businessmen, bankers and politicians didn't have a clue what was going to happen and thought that the good times would carry on rolling.

this small book shows in a logical way how speculation can make intelligent people do stupid things.galbraith shows in detail how money can in a practical sense buys up the intelligence of those involved in it.the recent dot.com mania demonstrates galbraiths analysis at work,as people were swept away in the dot.com tide.galbraith is a true prophet, may he live to a hundred.

The Affluent Society (Penguin Business)

by: John Kenneth Galbraith

August 05, 1999
Galbraith's classic economics text has been influential, but not quite influential enough - in a world of unsustainable consumption and runaway debt, we really need some of the ideas in this book.

The central idea here is that the production model of the economy is fatally flawed. It is based, Galbraith believed, on a good idea that was no longer relevant. For lifting the US out of poverty and meeting people's needs, it had worked well. Now that people were affluent and their urgent needs were all met, it was foolishness. People aren't happy, they work too hard, there is still great inequality, and there is a growing rather than shrinking income gap between rich and poor. I really enjoyed reading this book, I was glad it was chosen as part of my reading list. I found it incredibly interesting and easy to read. Although it was a necessary for me to read part of my course it is one of the books I will keep and go back to. Not just for students also for those who have a slight interest in the history and development of Economics. It will make you want to find out more.

This isn't just another rant about the evils of the corporations. It's a very cool and sharp analysis that's worth buying, reading, and re-reading just for the chapter on the imperatives of technology.
