I have often been critical of Iggulden's work - especially this recent series. However, that criticism has been stopped dead in its tracks. This is a stunning book, and perhaps one of the best I've ever read.
Iggulden has finally worked out what he is so good at - describing battles in a breathless and uncompromising fashion. Most of this book is a series of tremedous battles/sieges - and when he does come out of this, he keeps the less interesting interludes brief and concise. One teeny observation which does annoy me - his total fixation with one word - "wince". Surely he can find a substitute for it!
As I have said before, Iggulden will never be a writer of great sophistication, nor will he be a conveyor of intricate ... Read More:

I wish I had this book when I was a boy it brings back so many memories of things I tried to do (and nearly aways failed). Catapult making,go-cart making, first aid and girls all things that I sadly lacked the necessary skills in, not for the lack of trying I hasten to add. This book would have tipped the odds in my favour, I think. From codes to coin tricks I would have ascended to the rank of supercool with the knowledge in this book.
So parents out there I implore you to buy this book for your children and give them a fair chance in this unfair world and if not for that reason you could always read it yourselves !!!

Why cant Conn Iggulden write any faster? Have to say, another triumph. I love the way he writes, you feel like you are part of the whole journey. It's clever as well, because the heroes aren't heroes, there just as nasty as the bad guys, however they are your bad guys! Going to be depressed again now waiting ages for his next one :-(

This is a superb trilogy, very readable and probably more appealing to a male readership, with the leading characters being predominantly male and a lot of the story being about battles and "The Great Conqueror". I started to read them having watched the film 'Mongol' and I strongly recommend the film to anyone who is enjoying these books. Highly recommended.

The 3rd book in this amazing series may be the best. This series is a must read, even if you are not a historical fiction person. The combination of fact & fiction is so seamless and so well written that I have recommended this to all my friends who have loved it. This is a must for your bookshelf! Caesar lives!

Dont be put off by the Title of this review. It only gets 4 out of 5 because the rest were so good. To me the letdown is that he seems to rush over the last parts of Caesars life to finish the series. There probably wasn't enough for a 5th book, but seems to have crammed it all into the 4th. Saying that it's still an excellent book and this is probably my favourite set of historical fiction books.

Again, Iggulden blends fact and fiction in a seamless and gripping combination. He puts the known facts together with fiction based on historical knowledge to fill in a time when we know little about our hero Julius Caeser. I recommend this series to all my friends, and not a single bad comment amongst them, a must have for the bookshelf

This is probably the most fictional of the series, as this sets the story of our hero from a young boy. As usual Iggulden blends fact and fiction together in such a way that you dont know which is which to create a real page turner of a book, and in the same time giving you an insite into life 2,000 years ago as if it was today

I had hoped for a wide variety catalog of things to do, so I was dissappointed to find only a few ideas in the book, and that they didn't leave a lot of room for fantasy. Thin content blown up to be something big.
