I am not a gardener, I have never watched gardeners world and have only a small back yard. i somehow came across this book while browsing amazon and thought it would be a nice stocking filler for my husband. anyhow, it is so easy to follow and inspiring that we now have green beans, leeks, onions and shallots growing in our little garden. The difference in taste from supermarket veg is unbelievable. This is a great book that takes you from buying seeds to taking vegetables out of the ground, if i can do it, anyone can! Next season we are moving on to courgettes, potatoes, broccoli........

I am a second-year allotment holder only just getting down to really understanding what I have taken on, and I love this little book. Firstly, it's a journal with blank pages for you to record everything you do, with a page per week. I am hoping it will last at least five years as I only write a few sentences per week, and that will enable me to compare across the years how well/badly I did, what jobs I was doing at what time, etc.
However it also gives a clear summary of "jobs for the month", and it has seasonal recipes from Carol's collection, and it's also really full of useful info (e.g. pages on "chitting potatoes" and "blanching vegetables" ) which will be a shortcut reminder of all the careful advice contained in the big Grow ... The precis of this book is very good and an accurate description of the book. Looking through it I can almost hear Carol's distinctive accent from Gardeners World reading it to me.
Carol starts off with providing some general guidance on growing - enriching the soil, companion planting etc. This isn't thorough advice - and of course, there is her other book which takes you through the entire growing process.
Vegetables are dealt with by season - even if you don't grow them, by doing this Carol lets you know what is in season when. For each vegetable she includes (limited) details on how to grow it, how to store it, how to prepare it, how to harvest it, the main cooking technique and other cooking methods and uses. Where ... Well, this is a good book. Really good pictures, advices, design and plenty of inspiration and ideas for balconies, roofs, raised beds, window boxes ans such.
I would certainly buy it. However, I did not give it five stars, since it lacks some chapter in following species-to-species treatment in containers. But do not get wrong with it, this book has a last appendix with tables and tables refering to conditions for growing all vegetables in containers, size of container, treatments, etc, but not the fully detailed history an details which I think the author could write.
I would give it 4 to 4.5 stars.
Buy it in combination with the "Bountiful container"
And also to the five-stars "21st century homesteading"

This is such a fun idea, and engagingly written. I loved this book - I found it hugely entertaining but also learnt a lot about plants. The pictures are beautiful and really support her text and ideas. A book for plant lovers and novices alike.
