I don't dislike this collection but for anyone looking for an accessible book of poetry for kids, I think there are better buys. The range of topics and style is impressive, however.
I don't find that the text scans particuarly well in many of the poems and the interviews with the poets are illuminating but add little to the enjoyment of the poetry. I find that small children, in particular, enjoy more rhythmic prose than is found in this collection.

The poems in this anthology perfectly encompass the literary pop culture of Britain in the 60's. At first reading, the exceptional poetry by the three authors seem somewhat silly, yet very entertaining. The styles vary many times, never to bore the now-interested reader. After a surface look, you can look deeper into the poetry, and the verse goes from clever to beautiful. These poets were much more than mirrors for the times they lived in, but they analyzed and simplified dozens of subjects, from Batman to the bomb, all in the beautifully wacky poetry they put in this book. A classic poetry book and an entertaining read at the same time, this anthology is a must-have.

This book will do wonders to stimulate the imagination of children (and adults). Its scary, entertaining, and above all fun... I'm an adult who loves it. English State schools stock it in their class libraries - which is how I read it by accident!!

This is a great teaching resource. You can either read the book as a class novel, from start to end, or dip into it and pick out stories to suit your lesson theme. I have use the book with P3 to P7 children and it has been well received by all. The short philosophical stories are based on old tales but are retold with a twist. Through them children learn about moral values and being a responsible citizen. A fabulous book for circle time discussions.

In Armada Brian Patten has written a quite breath taking collection of poetry which attempts to answer questions about love and loss. I would recommend anybody to read his work, it is simply brilliant. If you like his poems then you may also wish to read work by Roger McGough who is also exceptional.
