I am surprised at the negative feedback here. As a consistent user of Lonely Planet guides, I have to say that this ranked as one of the more useful country guides i have come across. Writing guidebooks must be a very tricky business - it is necessary to include such a vast quantity of information, while trying simultaneously to capture the feel and mood of a country in such a way that people know what to expect back home. This particular guide does an excellent job in this respect.
I spent one month travelling from Pretoria to Cape Town, taking a winding route through Swaziland and Lesotho. I had no schedule and went where I wanted when I wanted. And perhaps it is for this kind of travelling that this guide is most suitable - it ... Read More:

Back in '96 I deployed my first Lonely Planet in the Pacific Northwest United States. Later that same year I had a meeting in Washington DC and managed a whirlwind tour of the monuments around the National Mall and a very short visit to the Air and Space Museum. I was so knocked out I swore I'd go back, and when I finally did I was equipped with the obligatory LP.
This book, in fact, helped me cover more ground than I could reasonably have expected in two days. This timetable unfortunately prohibited any experimentation with the beguiling night attractions described - maybe next time! - but it helped me do justice to the splendour of the Mall at last, and to find my way round efficiently (also aided, I will admit, by MapEasy's ... If you buy just one book for your Baltic trip, this is the one. It is well-written, chock full of practical information and historic background to make the most of your travels. There's no worry if you don't know the language or how to catch the bus in Tallinn; it helps you do it yourself.
The one minor irritation is that there was no reference to TrekBaltics, an Estonian adventure travel company that we found on our own. That was a great find.
All in all -- a terrific book, and the most updated one available today.

Far from being fully comprehensive, this guide is pretty vague. Not bad as a rough guide, and admittedly has some useful numbers that I don't know where else I would have found, which is the crux of this book's success. There is no real competitor (it would seem) that has backpacker budget information. If you are looking for a mid-price or luxury holiday then there are better guides. French Polynesia isn't exactly the budget travellers haven that Thailand or even Fiji can be and there are less options for the financially challenged tourist. However the guide could be a lot more comprehensive with the information there is available.
Do not take any prices or times in the book at face value - I found most prices a little higher in ... Read More:
