I have just returned from Egypt tour. I had this book and it was excellent helpful guide. It helped me a lot especially sights description and necessary up-to-date information.

If you're looking for a budget orientated guidebook then this isn't it. A quick peak at the budget accomodation section of any place reveals only one or two truly budget options before prices rise exponentially and quickly threaten to overwhelm the midrange section. A typical example will be a hotel/hostel for 60Dh alongside one for 200Dh - an unlikely budget range except for those who have been in the sun too long or those who have over-indulged in their ilicit booze stash.

Having used guidebooks almost continually for the past year the number of map related mistakes in this guidebook is above average. Considering how much time you spend navigating confusing Medinas searching for a hotel, this is the one area where you want your ... Read More:

Algeria (Lonely Planet Country Guide)

I am planning a trip to Algeria in the next few months and was pleased to see that Lonely planet had at last produced a comprehensive guide to the country. For me it is concise and very readable but better than that I gave it to my Algerian boyfriend who read it from cover to cover. He confirms that the books is interesting and accurate.

The book covers not only tourist trails but the history of the country including the tragic war with France, the food and art. This is the essential book for travel to this part of the world - indeed I believe it is the only book.

This book contains everything you need to prepare for a trip to Egypt. Very sensibly laid out and beautifully illustrated it offers concise information on how to make the most of a visit to Egypt. Other guide books I have read contain pages and pages of unbroken text which makes trying to find what you are looking for very difficult. The index and layout of this book makes it one of the most practical and easy-to-use guide books around. The pull out map at the back of the book also makes a useful addition.

Anthony Sattin's book takes a Egypt from a different angle to many of the other books I have read about the country. "The Pharaoh's Shadow" contains no endless ramblings about the beauty of the priceless archaelogical treasures that Egypt is best known for, but follows the trail of a man very much in love with this country. Sattin sets out to understand the culture of modern Egypt by looking at "survivals" from times past. Sattin records his travels with humour, incredible detail and enchanting style. I devoured this book; it has served to increase my yearning for further knowledge of the fascinating land of Egypt. Enjoy.
