This fascinating book, thick with historical data and insights, makes a riveting read. Whilst having no wish to quarrel with previous reviewers, for this reviewer, the book's strength is to be found within the all too rare combination of the elucidation of pertinent details and the subsequent compilation and marshaling of this data in order to reach coherent conclusions. The hi-lighting of detailed minutiae is only of secondary value, it would appear, if any historical advances are unable to be procured from it. Fortunately, this fastidiously researched volume abounds in both.
It is a lengthy read, at round 670 pages, and is at times dense in the chronicled information it conveys. It is an honest read, too, and this reviewer ... Read More:

I've always queried the concept of the Rough Guide series of books. I know there was the TV show in the 80's I think it was, where people like Magenta de Vine pretended to be down with the kids and talk about Eastern Europe on a shoestring budget, all the while looking like her Gucci slacks had never seen a hostel let alone be strewn across its floor. My question about the books was then, should I draw any link between the two brand names spanning different media?
It sort of appears that I should, because the Rough Guide isn't, as one inference might suggest, a loose approximation of information, or an author's best guess at something (i.e. Cornwall is roughly west of London and quite nice). Funny as that might be, it night not ship in ... Read More:

Having used this book in practice, I've always found its comments on the locations it covers quite fair and its facts reasonably accurate. Obviously, a book like this can never be as current as the Net, so when looking for somewhere to eat you're best bet is to use your own initiative when you get there rather than sticking slavishly to every word of the text. Even so, I've always found it very useful. My only criticism is that there aren't enough street names on the maps it provides, and that can cause problems.

I'm a big fan of Scottish folk songs which includes a lot of Burns put to music. What I love about this book, that a friend was reading out last night, is how the stories make the poems come alive, just like music.

Whilst introducing new readers to many complex topics in criminal law, this book fails not to quote various sources of critique writings therefore allowing the reader to have a greater appreciation of the topics. I recommend this book to any undergraduate student who is looking for a comprehensive text book on criminal law.
