In response to Alison's Croggans post below I would like to say a few things.
Firstly I have nearly finished the first book in the pellinor series and very good it is too, i would give it five stars but as I've not yet finished it, or the series as a whole i feel that would be unfair. It's a thoroughly engrossing, intelligent and pleasing fantasy novel.
To the comments made about similarities to Tolkien, true they are there, but they are openly made. To think that any fantasy novel (post tolkien) does not have any influence by his work is simply foolish. It is very similar to the fact that all rock music (post beatles) is in some way influenced by their work. It's inescapable.

This book is incredible! i read it in 1 day as i couldn't put it down and sped through it. Alison's desciptions were first class and it left me wanting for more, you can believe that these world's nd poeple exsit. :)
Maerad's/Cadvan's relationship is very intense and when they argue it made me feel sad and i can really relate to it.
When Arkan comes in to the picture it is obvious, to me, that maerad and him are destined to belong together and the small reactions and emotions that they show when they are together sends shivers down my spine.
My one critisism is that Maerad and Arkan really should have kissed once just before he reads the runes on her lyre it would have just completed the whole "Je ne sais quoi"

What a book! Of the trilogy to date, this, in my opinion, is clearly the best.
While this differs from the two previous books, it is, I believe, for the better. The Crow focuses on Hem in the South of Annar, preparing for war, and it takes place at the same time as Maerad's events in the North (as shown in The Riddle). I think that Hem is a more accessible character than Maerad - but that might be because Im a male! I certainly felt more attached to Hem than I had with Maerad; I felt emotionally involved with Hem, willing him to succeed in his quests - finding Maerad, spying on the dark and simply staying alive. Furthermore, Hem is a very loveable character, which makes it easy for everyone to feel attached to him.
