Most children who are Thomas fans would love this set. We have great fun trying to keep all the pullback trains running at once (we have three extra), and swapping the points round so they avoid each other.
It's easily assembled, doesn't take up much storage space and apparently you can use the battery trains on the track, if you get tired of doing the work.
I shall definitely buy some other sets (this one has a tunnel and a station) to add on to this. A good value, good starter set.
I'm with the other poster, it deserves a better picture!

I have a 20 month old little Thomas fan in my family, and he had this for Christmas. It was really well-received!
Amazon's pictures don't make very clear what you actually get in the box. There is sufficient track to make the layout shown on the box (an oval shape, which another smaller shape within it). Trains can be sent in different directions by changing the points which is quite fun. There is a station, and then there are three little pull back engines. When I bought this, I couldn't quite envisage how this would work, but quite simply, all you do is pull them backwards along the track, this seems to 'wind up' the mechanism inside and then the trains will run along the track for at least a circuit or two of the track. Clever stuff! In fact, we had to restrain Grandad from taking one of the engines apart to see how it worked! If your little Thomas fan can't wait for you to lay out the track, the trains will run on the carpet too!
This is a traditional, simple toy, and all the better for it. Over Christmas, everyone wanted a go with the trains, and the fact that there are three engines included only adds to the play value. The toy itself feels fairly robust, and it is a real bonus, as other reviewers have noted, that there are no batteries to worry about. Well Done Tomy! A great toy!

This has so much play value, you pull back the engines and off they go. My son found it difficult at first, but with the help of his elder train obsessed brother he soon grasped the idea! This is something they can play for ages. This toy has the advantage of many other train sets that they are not having to just watch the toy, but having to put in the hard work to make it spin round!

First things first: the Tomy box clearly describes this toy as being suitable for 18+ month children, not the “Manufacturer's Minimum Age: 3” as described here on Amazon.co.uk. I am worried that this confusion will put off potential purchases by parents for their younger children. We were put off until we noticed this product in a shop on the high street and realised that the age information given here is wrong. There is another important point to consider: even though this product is called “Tomy Thomas Motor Road & Rail - Pull Back 'N' Go Train Set” this toy does not have any motor road components, only rail components. It seems strange that “motor road” in the title of the product. This description is also present on many other online web sites selling this product and the photograph on these other sites is clearly the Tomy product we have purchased.
This is a superb toy, in every respect. Our little 20 month old boy loves playing with his pull back n go train set all the time. The pull back action takes a little getting used to for little hands at first, but once this is mastered it is fun all the way. All you have to do is pull the engine back, say on the carpet, a couple of times and then put it on the track and watch it go. A fully charged up train will go around the full track a couple of times easily. I have given this toy only four stars for durability because when the train is pulled back fully it clicks and sometimes our little one keeps on pulling it back, which makes me concerned that with rough treatment this mechanism could break. The fact that there are no batteries though is great because there is interaction between your child and the train - much better than watching the engines simply going around and around.
You get three engines: Thomas, Percy and James so your little ones will be able to act out their games. We love the way the eyes on each of the engines move about - great touch. Our little one also loves to watch the engines come out of the tunnel. The supplied track enables you to make a wide circuit and an inner circuit, which is plenty of space for the engines to play around on. You can add track from the Tomy range if desired and then when your children get older they may want other trains from the Tomy range, the choice is there for you to make. The supplied tunnel and the platform/station are sturdy and will take lots of childlike rough treatment. The supplied track is equally sturdy. This toy is really great fun to play with and we cannot recommend it highly enough.

The catch? As the name suggests it's a pull-back set, if the kids you're buying it for are happy to do that then great but my little nephews soon lost interest doing that! I'd probably have been better off getting the 'medium' battery set that can be had for similar money.
The great thing though is that the track is compatible with the battery trains and accessories so you can always add a powered train afterwards if you wish.
