Electronics : E4c Sound Isolating Musician's Earphones

- Very good except when ...
Like one other reviewer has already commented, despite being well looked after, the sound stopped coming out of one earphone. The low rating I have given these earphones is in part due to this fault, and in part due to apparent after-sales support, or rather, lack of. A query about the fault that was sent two weeks ago has so far not been acknowledged or dealt with. Whether this is because my query went down a black hole or not, I do not know. I sent a follow-up query today. Other points - I found the bass a little lacking, and I found that running with these earphones was 'interesting'. Any movement of the cable against clothes for example, you hear rather loudly in your ear. These are, however, good earphones, but given the fault I mention, come with a risk of being not fit for purpose (i.e. no sound at all), and follow-up support being non-existent in my case at least. Whether this is an isolated case, I don't know, but I expected at least some sort of reply. I've seen this fault with cheaper earphones, and given the price paid for this pair, had assumed that they would be more robust.

I Brought these headphones from amazon, expecting them to be good, but i was not prepared for just how great they are, I have a great sound system at home, that sounds great, and i found it hard to find headphones that lived up to the same quality of sound, but these headphones really do, they have a great warm sound that still manages the complete accuracy you want from a pair of expensive headphones. the only thing is i want to upgrade now to the more expensive se530s. These headphones are so good i am intrigued by the better models. The good thing about these headphones is they are not dual drive so the sound does not seem to be separated, which i believe is a problem with the se530s. i hope these headphones last forever.
I have had a wide range of headphones ranging from bang and olufsens f2s, Sony MDR-V700DJ, Sony MDR-EX90LP, Sennheiser HD-595 (great) and more but these just seem to be the most comfortable all rounders i would recomnd them to anyone.

bought a pair of e4cs about 8 months ago- the cable insulation comes apart despite careful usage- now i have lost sound in 1 ear. left me wondering if the huge amount of money i paid for it was worth it?

As well as having an excellent sound as mentioned above, I think a round of applause is needed for Shure customer service.
After about 18months heavy use my EC4's have developed a bit of a crackle when the cord is moved. Shure have agreeded to replace them FOC even though I have no receipt.

I can't compare these with others in the Shure product line, or with their principal competitors (Ultimate Ears and Etymotic) but I can speak to their relationship to ordinary "earbud"-style earphones, and also can compare them to decent full-sized headphones (AKG 701s).
Basically, when I bought these I was quite disappointed, because I was comparing them to the 701s in a quiet room, which was not a fair comparison at all. Moreover, I had trouble fitting them into my ear to get a good seal (as do most listeners when they start with this type of In-Ear Monitor).
Once I got the fitting right, and started using the E4Cs in noisy environments such as planes, trains and a room with a television blaring, their astonishing quality shone through. These phones enable you to listen at notably lower levels than usual: you can listen to music pretty much perfectly on a plane with no loss of quality through background noise. The music is clear, and the presentation analytic, enabling a classical listener, for example, to pick out orchestral detail in quiet sections instead of fiddling with the volume controls all the time. Rock fans will be just as delighted to find that their mp3 player really does "go up to 11" all of a sudden (although personally I'd recommend that they preserve their hearing by dialling back the volume.) More amazingly, you can listen at total sound pressures that seem to be lower than the environment. Taking these IEMs out for landing suddenly exposes you to what an unpleasant noise a plane really produces.
A lot of people are going to look at noise-reducing headphones such as the Bose and think that these earphones are a poor second choice. In fact, this is the product you want if you're travelling in noisy environments. There may be equally good choices amongst other manufacturers, but I'd say that IEMs are your best choice, and absolutely worth the colossal price-hike that you see over conventional, non-isolating earphones.
